6 AMAZING TIPS: (Naming Your Startup)
1. Consider Your Products/Services
What is your company all about? If you’re in the business of something creative, it may be beneficial to choose a creative name for you company.
But being creative is not beneficial for all companies. Sometimes you just have to be blunt about what products or service you provide.
2. Check Trademarks and Copyrights
You may have the best possible name for your company. You have business cards printed and then you Google it...And bam! There are 400 other companies with the same name.
First, check and see if other companies have the name trademarked or copyrighted. Finding out upfront will save you money and stress in the long run.
3. Think Outside The Box
Let’s say you’re in the business of selling wine, and you want to come up with a great company name. Rather than stick to the obvious—wine—try to think of other words associated with your main product or service.
Instead of wine, think of corks, bottles, distilleries, grapes…anything and everything that has to do with wine. Make a list, and try pairing things
together.
4. Travel Abroad
So, you’ve made a list of names and still can’t come up with a great one. Try foreign languages. If you don’t like the word “wine”, but you think “vino” is so much prettier.
Use a translator tool and find out what a potential company name would be in a foreign language.
5. Throw Spelling to the Wind
Break some rules, have fun with different spellings. For example, let’s say you wanted the name of your company to be “Black & Blue Florist”, but you just don’t like the way it looks, aesthetically, on paper.
Use a “Q” for the “ck” sound in “black”, making it “blaq”. Remove the “e” in “blue”, making it “blu”. Now you have “Blaq & Blu Florist”.
6. Have a Great Story
Sometimes explaining the story behind you companies name is all you need to generate a great relationship with a potential client. And creating the name may be the hardest and most stressful part of the whole startup process.
But once you find something you love, make the most of it. It’s your company, you’re living your dream.
